Basically, your ETS date is the date you are released from active duty, unless you decide to reenlist. But if you're here, reading this, chances are you're not reuniting.
But, here's something to remember: Even if you are released from active duty, soldiers still have to fulfill their military reserve obligations.
For enlisted soldiers, the ETS process begins 180 days prior to the effective date of separation. Don't wait until the last minute to start taking steps towards ETSing.

As soon as you find your official STD date, find out why you can start. It is usually best to start the process 18 months before your separation date.
During this time, you want to start making decisions about your future. What job did you have when you left the military? Are you going to buy a house? Going to college?
Now is the best time to make sure your finances are in order. Are you taking advantage of your GI Bill? Do you have savings you can rely on until you find a job?
A year before your STD may seem like a long time, but it will soon pass. Think about what your ideal job would be after you leave the military. What are you interested in? What skills do you have?

This is when you want to track your paper trail: Are your orders approved? Do you have scheduled STD appointments?
It's time to start your job search. Even if there is no job listing, contact the companies you are interested in working for. Your skill set may be what the company needs to add to their team.
Are your records going back home? Although it may be too early to schedule your move, you can visit your advisor.

Your ETS appointment can be an emotional day, but for most Soldiers it starts like any other workday: PT and morning training, then waiting at the personnel office to give you your DD214 (if you haven't already received one).
Make sure all the information on your DD214 is correct. You will need this document in the future, especially if you are trying to get a government job outside of the military; You can get preference for many jobs.
