m&p 22 pistol

M&p 22 Pistol - I wrote a post in June about my search for the ideal compact .22 pistol to go with my new Silencerco Sparrow suppressor. Not particularly happy with any of the current production options, I ended up with the now discontinued and rather obscure S&W 2213. Since writing this post, I've had a little more time to shoot the gun and it's... great. I still won't scratch the compact 22.

It turns out that what I was really looking for hadn't been officially released for a few months: the Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Compact. When I first heard about this gun, I wasn't particularly interested. I shot a full size M&P 22 that came out a few years ago and was not all that impressed. The trigger is not very good and has that "toy" feel that I have complained about in other 22 gun reviews. Not surprisingly, production of the full-size M&P was contracted to Walther, whose 22 pistols don't have the greatest reputation for being particularly tough.

In contrast, the new M&P 22 Compact is made by Smith & Wesson and features a durable aluminum slide. That got my attention. If you've watched many of the previous videos here at the show, you've probably noticed that I'm a big fan of the full size and compact M&P 9mm pistols, so I'm completely at home with the controls and layout. From the M&P series. I could really get used to the compact 22 M&P if it was as good as its centerfire cousins. So let's see what we have...

S&w M&p 22c

Like most .22 LR pistols, the M&P 22 Compact fires 10 rounds, two of which come with the pistol. It doesn't have interchangeable backstraps like other M&P double-stack centerfire pistols, but that detail is much less critical in light of rimfire.

The sights are painted soft white with three dots, but the rear is fully adjustable for elevation and windage, which is always nice to see on a 22. I plan to black out the rear sights and maybe replace the front sight with red fiber. Dawson Precision optical sight. If not, I'll probably use an additional front rail and try to outfit it with one of the little Crimson Trace Railmaster lasers, because... "pew pew" laser beam!

Speaking of "pew pews," the M&P 22 Compact comes from the factory with a threaded muzzle covered by a barrel cap. This fact can easily be missed if not looked for, as Smith & Wesson did not include any mention of a threaded barrel in the owner's manual, nor did it provide the correct size wrench to remove the barrel cap. After much cursing and gritting my teeth, I finally managed to loosen the cap by replacing a small wrench I had from another threaded gun.

You may notice that I haven't included any close-ups of the tube cap, and that's because it's not very photogenic after I had to remove it. It has since been replaced by a threaded adapter, which is needed if you want to attach a suppressor or other muzzle device. I ordered mine from EWK Arms to widen and convert the 3/8"x24 M&P threads to standard ones like 1/2"x28.

Smith & Wesson's Three New M&p Pistols

Same shape as the compact M&P. The original compacts have the same dimensions as the full size M&P, just with a shorter barrel/slide and a shorter grip. The 22 compact, on the other hand, has the same dimensions as the full size, but is 15% smaller. The end result is a pistol that is much closer in size and feel to the M&P Single Stack Shield than any other M&P offering. At 15.3 ounces, it's a bit lighter than the Shield's 19 ounces, and I actually wish it was a few ounces heavier to keep it in place for longer shots.

Still, I like the size overall. It's small enough for people with very small hands, but the grip is long enough for the average person to grasp with all their fingers. The 3.56-inch barrel is long enough to provide a decent sight radius, but not too long relative to lightness.

I'm not sure why rimfire pistols always seem overloaded with unnecessary safety mechanisms, but the M&P 22 compact is no exception. It features an ambidextrous manual thumb guard modeled after the optional thumb guard found on standard M&P pistols. It's big, easy to use, and unobtrusive, especially if you're used to 1911-style thumb guards.

M&p 22 Pistol

This is definitely not a problem. The safeties I object to are the magazine release safety and the internal safety "lock" that uses a small key to disable the gun. I've already expressed my thoughts on the S&W's internal revolver lock, and I can't think of any reason why it would be better on a semi-auto. As for the magazine cut off, I think that's what really makes the gun

Safely. If I'm going to shoot a gun in practice, I don't want a magazine in the gun if at all possible. The presence of a magazine only requires one chance of a round accidentally ending up in the chamber when it should be empty. But you know...lawyers and stuff.

Okay, bad safeties aside, I still think the M&P 22 Compact is a great little bow, which was confirmed after it was put into the range. The trigger breaks at about 6 pounds, which is the same as the newer and much improved M&P centerfire triggers. 22 Compact is easy to handle and shoot

Like the M&P, although it is a slightly different size than any existing pistol in the series. Accuracy wasn't bad either. As I said in the Sig P938-22 review, these lightweight, compact .22 LR pistols are no replacement for traditional target pistols, but for what it's worth, I had no problem shooting inch groups at 20 yards with match grade ammo and bench. rest.

When using the M&P 22 Compact as a self-defense training tool, my only complaint is the slide lock lever. A lefty will immediately notice that it's not ambidextrous like the original M&P pistols, but even as a righty I didn't find it particularly useful for reloading. The slide lock levers on my other M&P pistols were stiff at first but loosened up after the first few hundred rounds. The lever on the 22 Compact is just as stiff as it was out of the box - at this point I can't even force it down the slide without using several fingers. I guess this is just another point for the proponents of the "power stroke" method of reloading.

In reality, I probably won't use the M&P 22 Compact as a serious practice tool for myself, but more likely as a fun shooter and something for new shooters. That means it's more often than not equipped with a suppressor that feels right at home in the M&P 22 Compact. With the Silencerco, the Sparrow sounds at least as quiet as any full-size fire extinguisher I can remember. I also found that, at least in the loads I tested, the short barrel of the 22 high-speed ammunition does not give the bullets enough space to reach supersonic speeds, which means that most factory ammo must remain quiet and subsonic for suppressor users.

Since .22 LR is still limited, I didn't shoot a dozen rounds through the little M&P for review like I would have liked. However, I was able to salvage a few boxes from the list of abandoned damaged boxes in our inventory. I shot about 300 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags (after sifting through the broken remains of small plastic CCI boxes and looking for rounds that weren't broken beyond recognition), and then a few rounds worth of Federal Champion Bulk Pack pencils and some Eley Subsonic Hollowpoints.

After scouring the reviews for the 22-level target set I was looking for, I also tested the accuracy of the Federal Gold Medal Ultramatch box and the Wolf Match Target, both of which I mentioned earlier with excellent results. With just a few drops of lube added to the slide races, the M&P 22 Compact went through over 500 rounds right out of the box without a single malfunction – no small feat for a typical .22LR pistol.

If all this talk of 22 rounds is making you jealous, Smith and Wesson is here to help. When you buy an M&P 22 Compact in the next few months, you can send them the receipt and get a free 222 round box of Winchester ammo. But when you come back through it and need to restock, just remember who warned you. One of the more attractive recent offerings from Smith and Wesson is the M&P22 Compact. This pistol is similar to the 9mm Shield, but differs mechanically.
