M&p 15-22 Review - The rimfire rifle competitions at Steel Challenge and Metal Madness have grown rapidly. And while .22 LR ammo is inexpensive to shoot, the rifle could be another matter. By the time one obtains the right gun, is equipped with feedback and collects the necessary magazines, the price tab can often exceed $1,000.
Smith & Wesson’s latest offering in the popular M&P 15-22 sporting .22 LR rifle line offers an alternative.
M&p 15-22 Review
M&P 15-22 Sport OR ($469, smith-wesson.com) is the basic M&P 15-22 Sport with a factory-installed red/green dot sight.

Author's M&P 15-22 Sport OR with optics as tested. A full 16-inch Picatinny rail rides atop the rifle, making for a plethora of sighting options beyond the included M&P dot.
15-22 is basically an AR-15 finished in .22 LR with blowback action and would be familiar with AR-15 experience. Operating controls are the bolt lock/release itself on the upper left side of the mag well, the magazine release at the top and forward of the trigger on the right side, a two-position safety measure behind the trigger on the left side and the force. Handle for non-reciprocating screws at top end.
Disassembly is also similar to an AR. The rear receiver pin is pushed outward to "break" the gun, thus securing the bolt and accessing the internal action and allowing the barrel to be cleared of the release. The front receiver pin allows the upper unit to be removed from the lower unit if desired.
The rifle has a 16.5-inch carbon steel barrel with an A2 flash hider. The forearm is a slim 10-inch M&P handguard with a Magpul M-Lok (including a two-inch M-Lok plate rail). A 16-inch Picatinny rail rides on top. The buttstock is a six-position adjustable polymer stock with a polymer pistol grip. The maximum overall length is 33.8 inches, and the empty weight is 5.22 pounds.

The trigger is also a standard AR-15 single stage at 7.1 pounds on a digital Lyman scale. This is heavier than some might want, but some club members have shot the 15-22 in competition and told me that an aftermarket AR-15 Mil-Spec trigger might suffice in the 15-22.
The M&P 15-22 Sport OR is available in three different stocks and retails for $469. The one we tested was the SKU 12722, which shipped with a 25-round magazine. Additional magazines are available and two magazines should take any shooter through the 25-round Steel Challenge phase. SKU 12723 (identical) is the same rifle, but shipped with a single 10-round magazine. The SKU 12724 (Most Compatible) ships with a single 10-round magazine and removes the A2 flash stop.
The M&P 100 is a unibody construction tubular dot sight that has 4 MOA variable-intensity dots. It measures 4.75 inches from front to back and features an integral M1913 Picatinny rail mount attached to the rifle rail, while providing unlimited eye relief so it can be mounted anywhere on the groove that best suits the shooter. The offset between the bore/sighting axis appears to be about 2.75 inches. Operates on one CR1620 battery (included) and an included flip-up lens hood.
The 4-MOA circular dot can be illuminated in either red or green, with a single potentiometer switch to control on/off and brightness level. Click it from the positive off position and then rotate the switch to adjust the brightness of the red color, or rotate it further to do it green. Windage and elevation adjustments are positive click-on adjustments at ¼ MOA.

Taking the gun out of the box, I opened the gun on the rear pin and removed the bolt. A light lube was applied to the bolt and other obvious bearing points, and the weapon came back together. It is the only lubrication or cleaning necessary during this 500-plus round test.
For my test load, I chose a mix of standard velocity (subsonic 1,070 fps) and high velocity loads that have been used in rifles and handguns. The subsonic loads include CCI Standard Velocity 40-grain solid lead, Aguila Target 40-grain solid lead and CCI Clean-22 (blue, subsonic) polymer coated 40-grain solid lead. High-velocity loads are CCI Mini-Mag 40-grain coated solid, Aguila Super Extra 40-grain coated solid and Federal 40-grain hollow-lead Hunter Match.
I started by loading 25 CCI-standard rounds into the mag. The large, ergonomic follower button is easy to load and the 25-round capacity magazine loads without issue. The next step is to get rid of the sight from the 25-yard rest.
The flip-up lens cap is squashed into my spherical edge, but it's easy to turn right, left, or even flip down. I decided to treat them as if the lens cap had been moved, and they pulled off and fitted easily again.
Mizuno Mp 15 Irons Review (clubs, Review)
The first set of three rounds is about six inches high and four inches wide. Positive click adjustment achieves a dead zero with more than half the magazine remaining.
Several white targets simulating a steel challenge were set up after that, and I opened a full magazine every time I ran through the gun when I opened it. The 4-MOA point is very bright and quick to find, and the window is larger than enough for quick target shifts. Although the dots are the same size as the red and green, I feel the green dots are a bit larger and "brighter". Perhaps this is because green is the part of the color spectrum that is most visible to the human eye, but being able to switch between red and green is a nice feature.
Changing the rheostat makes it easy. There are no buttons to press - just rotate the switch to quickly select the color and brightness level, or turn off the presence. This will definitely speed up the "Loading Make Ready" and "Unloading Show Clear" processes. I love that design feature.
Next accuracy test. The action of the AR-15 has proven to be one of the most accurate semi-auto rifle actions available (likely because of the way the bolt locks with the chamber). M&P does not disappoint. Contacting the red dot at even half power provides an accurate aiming point, and even with a heavy trigger, the accompanying precision graph will show this gun is capable of more competitive duties than just gluing a steel plate.
Stag Ar 15 Review
Then it was a trip to my team for my regular mid-week training session. I ran a few stages and then handed the pistol to my fellow shooters (all in the Class G or M RFRO Steel Challenge). A few shots from the M&P 15-22 Sport, and other than the trigger, the general consensus is that the gun is “very good.” At this point there are over 500 shots through the gun without any cleaning or oiling other than what I did straight out of the box. No defects at all, with any load.
The M&P 15-22 Sport has a stellar track record, and this new model variation could make this affordable shooter competition. He can make matches out of the box.
Accuracy tests are performed from a 25-yard bench. Group size is the average of three groups of five rounds, measured center to center.

NRA Gun Of The Week: Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus In 30 Super Carries | NRA Official Journal Everyone loves a good .22 LR shotgun. There's nothing like sending something casual after a long day. Even better, shooting a .22 doesn't break the bank. These little calibers aren't just for fun (although that's what they're used for); It can also be used as a training caliber, usually to reduce the cost of a more expensive caliber like the 556. The Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 definitely fits the bill for that. Is there a good thing? Here are my thoughts on this simple and straightforward review.

Answer: The first thing you should know is that the 15-22 is basically a 1-1 version of the standard AR-15. You will find a latch, a safety, that can charge the same handle. The only real exception is the lack of tube buffer. This is because the bolt is incorrect
